Edge Hill

Edge Hill is a suburb in Cairns in Far North Queensland. Indeed just four kilometres north west of the Cairns CBD, it is a well known residential area bordering on the Mount Whitfield Conservation Park.

The suburb contains cafes, restaurants a number of assorted shops, as well as the Cairns Botanic Gardens and Centenary Lakes.

Centenary Lakes

Centenary Lakes, located in Edge Hill is a tranquil oasis for visitors to enjoy. In addition, it contains consists of a number of interconnected artificial lakes with a combined surface area of seven hectares. It also offers facilities including barbecues, playgrounds, picnic areas and walking trails set within peaceful parklands and gardens for all to enjoy.

Edge Hill Cairns History

Edge Hill was one of the earliest townships to be established outside the city after settlement in 1876. The area was used for primary industry, including a Chinese market garden and over time the population grew.

By the 1930’s sufficient families lived in Edge Hill to warrant the building of a school. Later, in 1940 Edge Hill State School opened with 31 pupils, a single teacher and one classroom. The original school building still stands today as a reminder of the school’s rich past.

In 1973 the suburb of Whitfield was formally named, consuming the western part of the existing suburb of Edge Hill.

Edge Hill Restaurants

Collins Avenue has developed a bit of a reputation for fine dining. There are a number of restaurants between the roundabout and the botanic Gardens. Some of them include spicey bite, noa’s, osmosis and the Haruka Japanese Restaurant.

Edge Hill Cairns Crime

Edge Hill is a low crime suburb. The main traffic areas are busy and well ‘activated’, which reduces crime. Many long term residents and neighbours who know each other also leads to less crime in this suburb.
