In 1904, Peter Petersen discovered gold on his property. His family managed to mine the gold and keep it secret until 1915. However, by 1932 there were 40 people mining the gold field. The last mine to close was the Talisman Mine in 1985.

In 2008, the Cairns Regional Council and the State Government committed to the
development of a strong planning framework for Mount Peter, based on a shared Vision and in collaboration with the community, industry and all levels of government.

Up to 50,000 people will live at the site over the next 20 to 30 years. This is about half of the predicted population growth for FNQ.
